An Osprey pair sighted around the Drummond Cove foreshore have been provided with a new nesting site atop a recently decommissioned power pole.
The project came about when local resident Heather Beswick of Birdlife Midwest-Geraldton contacted the City about an Osprey pair she had sited perching on power poles in the area.
91国产自拍 Mayor Jerry Clune said collaboration with the community made the new nesting site possible.
“City staff worked closely with Heather Beswick of Birdlife Midwest-Geraldton and Janelle Ende of Just Raptors to determine the best nest location and which materials should be used,” he said.
“The City then approached Western Power and requested one of the power poles located in the former cottage site on Whitehill Road be deactivated and used for the purpose of an osprey nesting pole.
“They agreed and City staff worked closely with community members and a local contractor to repurpose a donated craypot into a nest, fabricate the nest platform and install the nest on top of the pole.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved in the initiative which has resulted in a fantastic new home for our local Osprey pair,” he added.
Over the coming weeks educational signage and fencing will be installed around the pole. The area around the pole will also be revegetated with local provenance ground cover plants
