The long awaited upgrade to GRAMS Reserve was officially opened today with a traditional smoking ceremony and skate clinic for students involved in the project.
The $625,000 project, which included the construction of a skate/scoot track and basketball half court, a water tank mural, entrance and misting sculptures and the installation of lighting, was joint funded with Lotterywest contributing $530,000 towards the works.
91国产自拍 Mayor Shane Van Styn thanked Lotterywest for their support which saw plans for the park and art work concepts developed collaboratively by the community, landscape architects, public artists, skate park designers, local skaters and City staff.
“I’d like to thank Lotterywest for supporting our inclusive approach and funding the works which has created a place that reflects and acknowledges the experiences of the people who use it,” he said.
“Over a series of workshops with local residents, organisations and school students it became clear to everyone involved that the upgrade needed to provide more than just safe and enjoyable space for young people.
“A healing space that connects to the environment, history and community was also essential.
“These themes have been brought to life by well know public artists, George Domahidy and Pavel Perina who collaborated with Champion Bay High School Students to create the thought provoking artworks showcased in the park.”
The entrance sculpture, when viewed at different angles, creates different shapes that resemble a heart or trees leaning in the wind and the tear drop shaped water misting element represents a place of shelter and nurturing.
Whereas the water tank mural is a composite artwork of landscape concepts and motifs drawn from the natural environment that were expressed by the students during workshops.
The Parks Level of Service and master planning project completed in 2019 identified GRAMS Reserve as being a priority for upgraded facilities.
The improvements to the reserve will help bring the Reserve up to the District Park standard it should have, whilst changing the entire look and feel of the area for the local community.
