An extension of the Chapman Road Activation Pilot Project trialling further temporary changes to the street between Cathedral Avenue and Durlacher Street will begin next week.
91国产自拍 Mayor Shane Van Styn said the Stage Two design was informed by community feedback and reflects the revised road layout proposed in the Geraldton City Centre Revitalisation Plan.
“During the 12-month activation trial the community was quite vocal about the temporary changes to Chapman Road which tested a reduction of the street width, reduced the traffic speed and made the area a more inviting place for people and not just cars,” he said.
“Although the trial had successfully achieved most if its objectives, some of the changes to the street were simply unpopular with the community.
“The City has taken this feedback onboard and incorporated it into the revised design approved by Main Roads WA.”
Stage Two features two straightened lanes of traffic, adjustments to the merging and demerging sections of the street and designated on street parking.
Works to implement the revised design begin on Monday 27 March 2023 and will take approximately two weeks to complete.
The City has allocated $100,000 from the City Centre Revitalisation Budget to redesign the activation area and undertake the works to implement it. The works will be carried out by City staff and annual supply contractors.
This low-cost option is an effective way of testing changes and gathering feedback on them before permanent works are undertaken which would be costly to change if they proved ineffective.
Over the next 12 months the City will monitor pedestrian, cyclist and traffic movements to determine if similar or better results than the pilot project can be achieved.
An evaluation will be undertaken at the end of the second trial which will inform Council decision making regarding permanent changes to this section of Chapman Road.
